LOCAL CHURCH
Caledon
2020 Marks 20 Years of active ministry for our Senior Pastor Rodney Johnathan Nissen and his family.
We thank God for His grace upon Pastors life and ministry path.
All Leaders need graceful people around them in order to grow, and that what I had.
This journey started with a conviction for saving souls in Caledon and excellence in ministry.
Little did he know in 1995, when arriving in Caledon as a young 22 year old novice educator, that he would firstly be called into ministry, and later had the honour to build a church that are so impactful and vibrant.
After a few years in teaching, he discovered his real passion in life, and that’s to teach the simple message of the Gospel in Caledon.
Educators and even learners responded and he started a prayer group in 2 000, after a brief stance at the AFM church Under the leadership of Pastor Smith.
The initial group of 5 members, namely Sister Leatitia Apollis, Deacon Frank Damon and his wife Verna, as well as the late Brother Samuel – grew exponentially and they decided to start a church in 2000, called Caledon Pentecost Church.
Many tent crusades were held and preachers like: Apostle Clive Philander, Apostle Jan Adolf, Pastor Reginald Hendricks, Pastor Kitching from Namibia, Pastor Bob from Australia, etc. came to minister with us.
In 2000, we had our first ever combined tent Crusade, working with the late Pastor Sammie Tobias and Pastor Karl Makka and the Church Of God, Botriver. Many souls were saved and life’s restored during this Rival campaign.
It’s at this Crusade that that Pastor Rodney Nissen met Pastor John Mitchell from CoG Botriver and he communicated his dream of joining Church of God and not wanting to register a new church. The relationship grew between Caledon Pentecost Church and Church of God and the 2 churches started to work together, through combined services, outreaches, etc.
Eventually we joined the Church of God of SA on Sunday, 23 September 2003, where Pastor Nissen was ordained as leader of COG Caledon, by our late Moderator Sauls.
Our church started in the garage of Ps Nissen, then moved to Elder Snyers’ wendy house in Third Avenue and later we altered between classrooms of Swartberg Primary and Secondary school in Caledon.
The Lord inspired Pastor Rodney to build a church, he communicated this dream to the Church board and congregants started to build a church for the Lord in Caledon.
Looking back over the 20 Years of ministry, God’s True calling is evident and the ministry impact is visible in so many lives.
Pastor Rodney Nissen is a real proponent for the youth and raised so many sons and daughter over the last 20 years. He loves to challenge the younger generation to do better and raise above their circumstances.
He also played a leading role building bridges in and around Caledon and the Overberg.
He believes that a church must have influence where it operates and all leaders must open themselves up for corporate partnership and Devine connection to ensure greater unity in diversity in our beloved country.
The road ahead is uncertain, and the 2020 Pandemic proved to us that only God is our source.
We must continue in our pursuit in changing lives through active ministry, building leadership capacity and influencing the next generation to stand on our shoulders.
“We really arrived at a special place in our history as a first generation church. A destiny where all generations and all groups in our society can come together and serve the Lord.”
